Fics that are so good I will rec them despite their complete and utter lack of smut (rated PG-13 or less):

Again and Again and Again and Again by Herostratic (one-shot, no rating given - maybe like PG-13 or a soft R?)

When Burt told Kurt that “once you start doing this stuff you’re not going to want to stop” he wasn’t kidding. This is a sweet, sexy funny little one-shot wherein it slowly becomes evident that Kurt and Blaine are just…having sex. Like, all the time. Instead of doing anything else when they’re alone. Ever. Kurt gets concerned and Blaine tries to reassure him (because really, it so isn’t a problem). This fic is sexy despite the lack of actual smut, but I especially just love the warm, natural tone to the banter between the boys here. This fic definitely encapsulates what I imagine their relationship to truly be.

In Search of Meaning by Fabfemmeboy (one-shot, PG-13)

Most of this fic is Kurt pontificating after leaving Blaine’s house after the events of The First Time. It’s a really fantastic examination of their relationship and what it all means from Kurt’s perspective and it’s both perfectly sweet and perfectly realistic.

Covered in Rain by oncetwiceforevr (one-shot, PG-13ish or maybe a soft R)

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of prose in this fandom. The story is sweet and simple: It’s an AU wherein Kurt and Blaine meet in a coffee shop in New York. But honestly what makes this story so special is the style in which it is written. It is like pure poetry, but not the least bit dense or opaque – in fact, it is the very definition of light and clear. It is just a lovely, soothing, sweet and beautiful read that will leave your heart aching without really understanding why.

Uninvited Criticisms by YourFairyGodfather (one-shot, T)

In this fic, Kurt turns into sharp-tongued diva when he feels like people are being obnoxious or classless in public.  Blaine hasn’t seen this side of Kurt yet and he’s terrified what Blaine will think of him if he finds out. Kurt  enlists Mercedes and Tina’s help to divert Blaine’s attention on a Black Friday shopping trip, and what results is hands-down one of the funniest fucking fics I have EVER read. YFG is absolutely brilliant at making Kurt and Blaine so very incredibly KurtandBlaine, and the other canon characters are spot-on as well. This fic is so much fun to read that I’m pretty sure I paused to mutter “this is fucking awesome” to myself several times when I first read it.

Wherein Blaine is Well on His Way to Becoming a Crazy Cat Lady by Water_nix (one-shot, PG-13)

So this is one of the funniest little Klaine fics I ever did see. And I’m a bit of a crazy cat lady myself, so I loved it for that reason too. Basically, Blaine’s having anxiety about Kurt leaving for New York. Kurt’s solution is to get Blaine a kitten…a pure white kitten with blue-green eyes, since Blaine has told Kurt he reminds him of a cat. And it just gets unbearably hilarious from there. If you need something to cheer you up, read this fic. It will definitely make you smile.

Hero by Ukulellie (one-shot, K)

This fic is such a sweet and spot-on insight into Blaine’s inner world. The focus is on the scene in Michael when Blaine pushed Kurt out of the way of Sebastian’s rock salt slushee and let it hit him instead. The premise is that Blaine has always just wanted to be someone’s hero. Especially Kurt’s.

Wild Horses by Happyinchintz72 (22 chapters, T)

This is simply one of my all-time favorite fics. The writing is just so beautiful and elegant and heartwarming and focused and perfect. This is an AU fic in which Kurt never spies on the Warblers or attends Dalton, so he and Blaine haven’t met. A local chapter of P-FLAG starts a pen-pal program to help LGBT kids in Ohio feel less alone and have someone to talk to, and Kurt (reluctantly) and Blaine (earnestly) decide to participate, and end up paired with one another. For much of the story they are writing to each other, and they get to know one another on a deeply intimate level before they even meet. There is a vibe of old-fashioned courtship in some places, and the pacing is absolutely FLAWLESS. If you read one fic on this list, let it be this one.

Pancakes and the Simple Life by Rainjoy (One-shot. She says R, I’d call it PG-13, personally).

This is just so good it hurts, and unbelievably fucking funny to boot. It’s a one-shot about the ND meeting for brunch the morning after prom. Kurt brings Blaine and Santana forces Karofsky to go as well. The story is told from Karofsky’s point of view, and in his head he does not to refer to Blaine by name. Oh, no. He refers to Blaine as the Fucking Perfect Private School Boyfriend. You heard me. Impeccably written jealous Dave. Be still my heart. And Santana is amazing in this as well, which just makes the whole thing hurt even better.

As The Present Now will Later be the Past by Caroline_shea (4 chapters, PG-13)

This is probably one of the most straight-up beautiful and important (yes, I am saying important) fics that I have ever read. It handles some very painful and complex issues just magnificently without feeling the least bit awkward or preachy. It’s a fic about where the world has been and where it’s going. It’s about Blaine’s father having a big, big secret. It’s an immaculate portrayal of Klaine in all their earnest, awkward, loyal, nervous in-love teenage glory. It is something you should definitely, definitely read.

The Lists by Susala (one-shot, K+)

Let me start by saying that this fic takes place before Klaine is a couple in canon, but I feel like it fills in a really important gap very beautifully. I have always been of the opinion that part of what made Blaine start to smarten up and figure out his feelings for Kurt was the fact that Kurt began to see Blaine’s flaws and humanity instead of just worshiping him. It wasn’t until they were relating as equals that they could really be together. This fic works on that premise exactly, and entails Kurt sitting down after the events of BIOTA and writing 2 lists – Blaine: The God in Skin, and Blaine: Only Human. It’s a wonderful look at Kurt’s evolution as a character and fits in beautifully with the Klaine arc in season 2.

Stay Perfect by Naivewaltz (2 chapters, PG-13)

Such a sweet fic! AU wherein Kurt and Blaine are college students that never met. Blaine is crushing from afar, but afraid to talk to Kurt, so he starts anonymously sending him Shakesperean love sonnets and other poems. Kurt tries to figure out who his secret admirer is and starts to write back. This will set your heart a-flutter.

A Beautiful Mistake by Scarlettfire (WIP, 41 chapters including epilogue, T)

AU in which Kurt and Brittany did more than just kiss during that straight-acting phase of Kurt’s in high school, and Brittany ended up pregnant. The story begins with Kurt as a single father to a nine-year-old girl (Brittany is still in the picture, but their daughter lives with Kurt). This is such a wonderful and plausible picture of how Kurt might move into adulthood if this kind of responsibility were thrust upon him. Kurt and his daughter are living in a duplex in Staten Island when a new neighbor moves in. A really cute neighbor named Blaine. Kurt hasn’t really dated much at all in his life as a young single father, but he and Blaine begin to strike up a lovely friendship. Their interactions are unbelievably sweet, but let me say this: The author spends a very, very, VERY long time KILLING us with sexual tension before getting to the good stuff.  So you should prepare yourself for that going in.

Reasons by Aspiringtoeloquence (one-shot, T)

Future fic. Kurt and Blaine are having some difficulties, and they have a fight in which Blaine wonders if Kurt really wants to be with him. Kurt then begins sending Blaine texts, starting with this one: “As you seem to believe I don’t know my own mind without some kind of meditation, I am now going to spend the next twenty four hours spamming your inbox with some of the reasons why I want this to work. Starting now.” This goes from angsty to unbelievably sweet and fluffy with perfect fluidity, and it is one of the sweetest little fics I have ever read.

Sally Meets Harry by Mary-Flanner (11 chapters, PG-13)

This is an AU chronicling of the Klaine arc in season 2 if things had been set into motion a little differently and Blaine had therefore fallen for Kurt first. This is SO well-done and just unbelievably clever and inventive and plausible.

Through the Eyes of the Observer by Klemonademouth (one-shot, T)

This is perhaps one of the most sweetly satisfying one-shots I have ever read. This is Kurt and Blaine’s road from friends to boyfriends – complete with fights and laughter and coffee dates that aren’t really dates, and it’s all told from the point of view of a barista at the Lima Bean. She and her co-workers get a bit too invested in their speculations as to whether the boys will get together, and even go so far as making bets. A bit of the barista’s character leaks in – just enough to make her interesting without overpowering the Klaine of it all. This is an especially good read after a long, hard day. It really is quite a pick-me-up.

Never Did Run Smooth by Flaming_muse (one-shot, T)

The boys have a fight and things get blown out of proportion when they don’t communicate about it. This is so in-character and perfect.

No Need to Buckle Up by Skintightsocks (one-shot, PG-13)

Very fluffy and lovely and a bit sexy. Takes place at the end of Kurt and Blaine’s date after the events of Night of Neglect (episode 2X17).

Swing Sets and Sandboxes by beautifulwhatsyourhurry (17 chapters, PG-13)

This is an absolute fandom classic, and if there’s any chance at all that you haven’t read it, you really should. This is an AU fic in which Kurt and Blaine meet at the age of 7 and become best friends. There is lots of angst and there are lots of moments that are so cute you just want to scream. It’s a beautiful story and it will make you emit a dreamy sigh when you reach the end.

All the love in the world by Aubreyli (one-shot, G)

Unbelievably sweet, unbelievably fluffy. Kurt watches Blaine sleep and can’t even handle how much he loves him.

And the Living is Easy by flaming_muse (one-shot, T)

Just a sweet and fluffy fic about the boys spending a lazy summer afternoon together in a hammock.

Rules of Play by Rainjoy (one-shot, PG-13)

SO good, SO authentic, and SO FUCKING FUNNY. This perfect little fic is basically Blaine trying to talk to Kurt about sex in a very Blaine-esque way. I actually laughed out loud more than once on this one.

Finding a new script by Wordplay (one-shot, PG-13)

A wonderfully drawn Klaine first date, and fluff flying everywhere. This also features a Burt-Blaine convo that is pure quality. Very fluffy, a little sexy, a little funny. All-around lovely.

Fast and dirty and utterly delicious (really hot PWPs):

I Want (formerly listed as “Untitled but really hot PWP”) by Shanksmuseum (one-shot, NC-17)

“They had been together for 8 months now and they had come up with this little game to make Kurt feel a little more comfortable in the sex department, a game they named “I want”. After a week or so they found the best way to do it was by paper, leaving little notes for each other with, on them, things they could try and do and test. It never went too far or got too dirty and it was quite obvious they were both holding back but according to the paper in Kurt’s hands, not anymore.” That passage pretty much sums up the premise of this intensely hot little fic, and the game they are playing ends up leading them into drawn-out, perfect, intense first-time sex. This little fic is just gorgeous, and captures the boys’ characters perfectly.

Pulling Focus by Aeria (aka DoonaRose on Tumblr) (one-shot, NC-17)

Honestly, I’m picking my favorites amongst this fabulously talented lady’s incredible smut fics for this list, but you should really just read everything of hers because it’s all intensely hot and incredibly well-written. In this fic, Kurt decides to put on a show for Blaine – and he gets himself off in front of an absolutely wrecked, lust-addled Blaine, not letting him touch (well, for most of the fic anyway) and it’s deeply fucking hot.

Hush by NaomiRaven (one-shot, NC-17)

This is one of my all-time favorites ever. The boys have silent sex (you’ll find out why at the end), and it’s just incredibly sexy, with such lush language and vivid imagery. I feel like I can almost see Blaine’s face when he grits his teeth against the pleasure of it all, and yes- it really is that good. Kurt’s riding Blaine in this one, which is also something I kind of can’t ever get enough of.

Between Hard Places by Sleepinnude (one-shot, M)

Very well-written and really, really, really, really hot wall sex. There’s really nothing more to say about it.

23:28 by Aristide/Cimmerians (one-shot, NC-17)

This is quite possibly the hottest PWP in the world. Kurt and Blaine have been trying to add a sexual dimension to their relationship for awhile, but they keep getting cockblocked by one thing or another. Finally they find themselves with twenty-three hours and twenty-eight minutes, and they use it to have an all-out fuckfest. Reading this will probably make you come.

Speak my Language by Sassafrass91 (one-shot, M)

Blaine is sick of doing his French homework, so Kurt makes him a deal: If Blaine can understand and carry out 10 commands that Kurt gives him in French, they can take a study break. It starts off innocent, and quickly transforms into a very interactive exercise.

Item Number Five by Whenidance (one-shot, NC-17)

Hot little PWP with frottage and handjobs. Blaine’s a bit insecure when Kurt discovers how very well-hung Blaine is, but Kurt, ever the considerate boyfriend, reassures him.

Hate on me, Hater by Rrrowr (one-shot, NC-17)

So this is totally cracky AU Klaine hate-sex, the premise being that Kurt and Blaine are rival fashion critics. It’s really just a PWP, and it’s hot as fucking hell.

It Was Only a Kiss (How Did it End up Like This) by Idoltina (one-shot, NC-17)

This is a cracky PWP that exists on the premise that ND and the Warblers did go on tour over the summer, and Blaine did kiss Kurt onstage at the end of the tour. This is really hot Bottom!Blaine smut, and my favorite line comes from Blaine: “Anyone who ever saw you dance like this would know you’d be a great top.”

Fics with just a little too much plot to really be PWPs, but still pretty close:

Always Be by Wintervixen86 (one-shot, M)

This fic is so fucking hot it’s almost dangerous. Blaine and Kurt broke up several years before, and now Blaine is living in New York and sure, he’s imagined running into Kurt again. He just never imagined running into him when Kurt was on the dance floor of a crowded club, in mascara and skin-tight leather and with guys all over him. And Blaine certainly never imagined how possessive or jealous the sight would make him feel. And when they finally run into one another in the bathroom…well. Just be prepared to get insanely turned on.

You Can Keep Your Toys in the Drawer Tonight, All These Intrusions Just Take us Too Long (and I Want You So Bad) and Pumping, Asking for a Raise by fabfemmeboy (3 sequential one-shots, NC-17 for all three)

Please Note: if you scroll down past the long and bizarre list of tags for part 2, the fic is  there. I just couldn’t find a link that didn’t have all that weirdness going on and trying to navigate LJ stresses me out at the best of times.

So. These are three one-shots that read like a single three-chapter fic, and each section is epic in its hotness. This takes place sometime circa Silly Love Songs/BIOTA, definitely before they get together in canon, and everything is basically set into motion when Blaine accidentally discovers Kurt’s drawer of sex toys. In assuring Kurt that he has nothing to be embarrassed about, Blaine attempts to tell him that it’s “entirely normal,” but what comes out is “entirely hot.” And things take off from there. Part one takes place in Kurt’s bedroom, part 2 takes place in the car going from Kurt’s house to Blaine’s, and part 3 takes place in Blaine’s bedroom. The majority of the fics consist of the boys getting themselves off for one another’s benefit, and Kurt isn’t the only one with a drawer full of toys. If you read this, prepare yourself to be turned on for a very, very long time.

One Million Invisible Lines by Aristide/Cimmerians (2 parts, NC-17)

Blaine is a gentleman. And Kurt is getting sick of it. But Kurt starts to notice that when Blaine gets jealous, Blaine gets handsy. Misunderstandings and hilarity ensue, finally resulting in drawn-out hot and awkward first time sex.

Teach Me a Lesson by Monochromaticsongbird (one-shot, M)

So this is Teacher!Kurt meets Bad boy!Blaine AU fic. Kurt is fresh out of college and teaching theatre, and Blaine is a student with a motorcycle and a bad attitude. What will Kurt do to put him in his place? This fic is really fucking hot.

How Kurt Hummel Got Married, Fell in Love and Met His Dream Man (In That Order) by Aubreyli (3 parts, NC-17)

This is one of my all-time favorites. This is an AU fic in which Kurt is essentially married off to Blaine and Blaine wants one night to convince him to stay in the marriage. Almost all of the 3 chapters are unbelievably hot smut. So hot and SO well-written. And did I mention hot? Deliciously hot.

A Winning Game by Aristide/Cimmerians (one-shot, NC-17)

Kurt slowly gets comfortable with his own body and making himself come, and then proceeds to painstakingly deflower Blaine.

Nineteen Minutes by Aeria (one-shot, M)

Future fic - They haven’t seen each other in a week, and Rachel is on her way home, upset and in need of a night of attention and solace. And she’s due to arrive in nineteen minutes.

So however shall they use those nineteen minutes?

Take Comfort in Chaos by Whenidance (one-shot, NC-17)

It starts off with a slightly grumpy Kurt on a too-hot summer’s day, turns into running through a path in the woods holding hands during a rainstorm and ends up with blowjobs on top of the dryer at Blaine’s house. A lovely little sexy summer fic.

Texts From Last Night by Klemonademouth (one-shot, NC-17)

Blaine gets a text from Kurt. It says “I can’t stop thinking about you naked.” This goes from an awkward conversation to a desperate, lusty conversation and ends with backyard hand jobs. Really very sweet and hot.

AUs with no funny business (Blatantly non-cannon, but not outside an accepted mainstream version of “reality”):

Go Your Own Way by Zavocado (28 chapters, M)

So this is definitely one of the best Badboy Blaine fics in fandom. The basic formula is of course Blaine being all badass and sleazy and cocky and hitting on Kurt, who is all prim and icy and uptight. But this story takes that basic formula and turns it into something real. This fic is complex and heartbreaking and heartwarming, all while delivering us a sexy, jaded Blaine who knows how to use a knife in a fight. Hell yeah.

Nothing’s So Loud by GlassParade (18 chapters plus epilogue, M)

This fic is a Say Anything AU, and if you are a fan of the movie like I am, then the mere fact of this fic’s existence will make you squee. But just wait until you read it and discover that it is fucking amazing in every way – one of the most skillful exercises in blending pure Klaine essence into a classic movie that I have ever seen. If you have not seen Say Anything, that will not detract from your ability to enjoy this fic one little bit – the premise is that Kurt is graduating from high school as the class valedictorian, a very focused student who completely sacrificed any semblance of a social life to achieve his academic goals. Blaine is graduating without any firm direction in his life, and all he knows is that he’s carried a flame for Kurt long enough and it’s time to do something about it. The fic is set in the 90’s as opposed to the 80’s (which is when the movie came out), with lots of fantastic 90’s music and pop culture references. The pacing is flawless, the story aligns perfectly with the movie when appropriate and diverges when it should. All in all, this fic is just an amazingly satisfying read.

Light in the Loafers by Fabfemmeboy (36 chapters plus prologue, R)

So let me start by saying I haven’t finished this yet, but it is already one of my favorite Klaine fics. This fic is the first in what is promised to be a very long series, chronicling a teenaged Kurt and Blaine meeting at Dalton in the 1950s and following their complicated relationship and their lives as gay men in America through to the 1990s.  This fic…how do I even talk about this fic? It is SO incredibly breathtaking and honest and real and obviously quite painstakingly researched. This first fic in the series, where Kurt and Blaine are figuring out what homosexuality even is, and the way that their discoveries inform how they see themselves and the world, is nothing short of magnificent. There are other canon characters in the mix, and issues of race and gender and class (but especially race – this is the 1950s after all) are seamlessly and beautifully woven into the narrative. This fic is a bit of a painful read – especially given how self-hating poor Blainers is, thinking he has an illness he can cure if he tries hard enough – but touching and gorgeous as well, and this particular version of Kurt is incredibly brave and inspiring. This is definitely one of the best stories – fanfiction or otherwise – I have ever read.

Good (You Know What I Mean) and No Object of Lust by Herostratic (Sequential fics, 2 parts each, NC-17 for both)

This is a 1950s Klaine AU where we have ourselves a 50’s style badboy Kurt and a straight-shooting, earnest, innocent homo-ignorant Blaine. When Blaine finds a scratch on his convertible he knows his father will kill him. He brings it to Burt’s garage and Kurt agrees to fix it for free…if Blaine will give him a ride somewhere afterward. The first fic is all about exploring and connecting and figuring it out, Blaine not quite getting what these feelings he’s having are at first…until Kurt shows him what to do with them. And the second fic is more about what to do with their relationship and what it all means given the world they’re living in. The fics are incredibly hot and well-written and well-researched, with ‘verse notes for points of reference such as 50’s slang and the kind of car Blaine drives. I looooove this little ‘verse and desperately wish there was more of it!

Always Here in the Silence by The Cimmerians (one-shot, NC-17)

This fantastic AU and satisfyingly long one-shot (15,000 words! Squee!) is a badboy!Kurt / Nerd!Blaine fic, and it is just all kinds of delicious. First of all, it’s The Cimmerians, so flawless writing is a given. The characters are very convincing and absolutely perfect AU versions of themselves, and there’s even a version of the Karofsky locker room scene with this Kurt that will leave you cackling. There is a complexity and depth to this story that a lesser writer could never have achieved, and the bond that grows between the boys is just simply beautiful.

For Better or For Worse by Sotto_voice (4 chapters, R)

This fic will just plain make you happy. Kurt is an up-and-coming wedding planner in New York, and he finally landed the big society wedding that will make or break his career. He ends up hiring an unfortunately-named and largely untested band to play at the reception because he’s seen their performances on YouTube and he just has a feeling about them – it’s not like the gorgeous lead singer with hazel eyes and dark curly hair has anything to do with it at all. There are appearances by multiple canon characters, and the tone of the fic is light and funny and touching and sweet. The perfect cure for an angst hangover.

Made With Love: What to Do With Two Perfectly Attractive Single Men by Foranotherworld (one-shot, NC-17)

This fic is just so cute I can hardly deal with it. A nice long AU one-shot in which Kurt runs a bakery and Blaine applies for an open position there. Kurt is all prim and “this isn’t appropriate, we work together,” and Blaine is all seductive and relentless and fixated, and there are baking metaphors and sexy licking of frosting off of fingers, and chemistry and sexual tension and descriptions of delicious baked goods. This fic will make you wish you had some pumpkin cheesecake bars to eat while you read your porn.

A Lesson in Chances by Oncetwiceforever (one-shot, PG-13)

This fic is set during college, in winter in New York. Blaine did have his revelation about his feelings for Kurt when he sang Blackbird, but Blaine never gathered the courage to say anything to him about how he felt, so instead they continued on as friends, as wrought with sexual and romantic tension as their friendship may be. They find themselves all but abandoned by their other friends over Christmas break and spend it together in Manhattan, growing even closer – and becoming even less clear about where their boundaries lie with one another. This fic is one of those one-shots that feels like a much longer fic because so much emotion and change is packed into it, and it’s really just beautiful.

Where There’s Smoke by Stoney321 (12 chapters plus epilogue, NC-17)

This is one of the sweetest Klaine AUs in the history of ever. This fic takes place when Kurt and Blaine are in their mid twenties, having never met in high school. When they do meet it is because Kurt has had a small kitchen fire in his Brooklyn apartment, and Blaine is the hot-as-fuck firefighter that arrives on the scene. What follows is a fumbling, earnest, painful and beautiful love story that hits all the right notes. The characterization is beautiful, the world is vivid, and the angst doesn’t get too intense. And Blaine’s a firefighter. Don’t even pretend you don’t think that’s hot.

Floorshow by Neaf (15 chapters, M)

I’m tempted to just say “it’s Neaf, people,” and leave my summary at that, because she really is that flawless. But in the interest of letting you know what the fuck the story is about, here goes: This is an AU wherein Blaine is an unhappy law student in New York, and is pretty underwhelmed with the banal nature of his existence. He decides to try out for the role of Brad in a Rocky Horror Picture Show Audience Participation troupe, and the man playing Frank starts to bring out a totally new side in him. If only the guy would tell him his name…

This fic is incredibly hot and incredibly sweet, with just a dollop of angst and lots and lots of pining. FYI: If you haven’t seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show, you may find it confusing at times.

Pretty Woman by Triddlegrl (23ish chapters, NC-17)

This is probably my #1 favorite Klaine fic of all time.  It is supposed to be based on Secret Diary of a Call Girl, which I am not particularly familiar with, and maybe the fic would be even more awesome if I were, though I can’t imagine how. Basically, Kurt is a professional escort (read: high-class prostitute) and Blaine is his best friend. Yes, this is absolutely a Klaine fic, so don’t worry your pretty little heads about that. But this story – I don’t even…it’s just perfection. It doesn’t sugar-coat anything, and it goes into some really deep emotional shit. The friendship and eventual romance between Kurt and Blaine in this is nothing short of phenomenal. I should warn you that for much of the story Kurt IS having sex with other men, though, so keep that in mind from the start, and don’t read it if that really bothers you.

Palpation by Rockinhamburger (one-shot, NC-17)

Oh my God I LOVE one-shots like this! A complete and perfect little story compressed into a single-serving-size of toe-curling fluffy heaven. The author’s summary: “Kurt Hummel was not meant for community college. Blaine Anderson was the undeniable silver lining. “ That’s the premise, but oh my goodness – AU with shameless references to canon Klaine, Klaine friendship with secret, tortured crushing on both sides, a dash of Burt, and a far too perfect ending. You won’t believe it isn’t a multi-chapter!

The Dapper Highwayman and The Lima Job by Mothergoddamn (DH is 3 chapters, LJ is 6, both rated M)

I am reccing these together because you really shouldn’t even consider reading one without the other. If you have not read anything by Mothergoddamn, punch yourself in the face right now. She is hands-down one of the funniest fucking writers ever, and her AUs are out-of-this-world good. This is the original badboy!Blaine fic, written well before the summertime craze. Blaine is called the Dapper Highwayman because although he is a criminal that robs convenience stores up and down the highway, he is so darn polite about it. Kurt is driving home from college and decides to pick up the poor, bedraggled (and damn fine) boy that is hitchhiking on the side of the road. And then the fun begins. The Lima Job takes place six months later, and as good as The Dapper Highwayman is, it’s actually even better. These fics are among my top five all-time favorite ever. I will cry for you if you don’t read them.

Together, we Are the Oceans by Aelora (15 chapters, M)

This is one of the first Klaine multi-chapter fics I ever read, and it’s still one of my favorites. The Warblers are invited to spend Christmas break performing on a cruise line in the Caribbean, and Burt and Carole go along as chaperones, bringing Finn. This is one of those fics that starts out tasty- painful because Kurt is pining for Blaine and confused about his mixed messages and so forth, and they’re all hugs and blushes and nervous almost-touches. There is a bit of angst, but the fluff wins out big time in the end. There is also some interesting (and unfortunately true) information about Caribbean politics thrown in, and Kurt and Blaine have to deal with the reality of visiting some places where they could end up in jail for even holding hands. Overall, this is just a really satisfying fic that will leave you smiling. And it’s chock full of Warblers to boot, which will just make you smile even more.

Literal Liminality by Idoltina (2 parts, NC-17)

This is a literal play on “you move me, Kurt” - Blaine and Kurt have never met. Kurt works for his father’s moving company and helps Blaine move to New York. This is a sweet roadtrip story with a touch of angst, a few dollops of hot lovin’ and a generous portion of adorability.

Shoot To Kill by DopplegangerTango (23 chapters, M. There is also a WIP sequel to this fic).

This is a wonderfully exciting adventure of a fic in which Kurt is a professional assassin. He is given an assignment, and his mark is one Blaine Anderson. Kurt uses all his normal ploys to get Blaine to trust him, and once he has the perfect opportunity to strike…well, it turns out that his feelings have gone and gotten all complicated. But if he doesn’t follow through with the assignment, then he is a dead man.

Whatever shall he do?

Things I Cannot Change by Beautifulwhatsyourhurry (20 chapters including epilogue, R)

This fic is just lovely. In this ‘verse Blaine is a new student at McKinley, and he and Kurt become fast friends. Before too long, Kurt finds out that Blaine is actually a fundamentalist Christian, who doesn’t realize that Kurt is gay, or an Atheist. The fic chronicles their evolving relationship, and the way that their perceptions and beliefs around faith and morality change as they grow closer and their feelings for one another begin to deepen. The issues in this fic are handled so skillfully and respectfully that it kind of blows me away.

The Lost Nightingale and The Swan Song by Mothergoddamn (LN is 7 chapters, SS is 10, both rated M)

Once again reccing 2 Mothergoddamn fics together, because The Swan Song is the must-read sequel to The Lost Nightingale, and if you are going to read one, you absolutely have to read the other. Mothergoddamn is one of the most stunningly versatile writers I can imagine, and this is a 1940’s Noir-style fic that is so spot on it makes me want to weep with joy. She just fucking nails the style, and the story itself is also amazing in its own right. Blaine Anderson is a hardened PI with a past in Los Angeles, and he is hired to find Kurt Hummel, an aspiring young actor who has been missing for three months. This fic manages to be both tongue-in-cheek gritty and sincerely thrilling at the same time.

The Cheerleader and the Greasemonkey by WhoreishMouth (one-shot, M)

Kurt is a Cheerio, and coach Sylvester insists on summer practices, making him unavailable to work at Hummel Tires & Lube. So Burt hires someone for the summer instead, and what do you know – it’s one Blaine Anderson. Cue shameless flirting, and…yeah. It ends up with an M rating for a reason. This is one of my favorite sexy one-shots, and it really is incredibly hot.

Denial: It’s a river in Egypt and Operation: Get Kurt Hummel Into Bed by Pavementchaser (both are one-shots, both are rated M)

I’m reccing these together because they are companion pieces and you really should read both, starting with Denial, which is from Kurt’s POV (Operation is from Blaine’s). The premise is that Kurt and Blaine don’t really know each other but they both go to the same college and have a class together. Kurt’s favorite hobby is seducing and sleeping with straight guys and avoiding relationships. He perceives Blaine to be a straight guy, and sets about trying to seduce him. These stories are smart and funny and sexy and fantastic, and they really enhance one another when read together.

The New Attractive to me is Divine by Undrsomestairs (4 chapters, R)

In this fic, Blaine transfers to McKinley his junior year, joins the football team, befriends a closeted Dave Karofsky, and crushes hard on cheerleader Kurt Hummel. I love this fic because it’s a very plausable and well-written look at how Dave may have behaved and developed differently as a character if he had had a supportive friend that he felt like he could confide in. Lots of Klainey goodness, too.

Illicit by Emilianadarling (4 chapters, NC-17)

This is a 5+1 prompt fill. The author’s own words describe this best: “An exploration of Kurt and Blaine, intimacy, trust, and control — through marijuana.” I love it and the writing is sweet and sexy and so authentic. It reminds me so much of high school in a wistful sort of way. And yes, ganja is most definitely smoked, so give it a miss if that bothers you.

Hope that Starts the Broken Hearts by Idoltina (R, 5 chapters)

This is the first story in the Breakeven ‘verse, and if you like it you will probably want to read the sequels. Kurt starts that local chapter of P-FLAG that he spoke to Karofsky about before transferring back to McKinley. Friendships are formed and strengthened, and Kurt and Blaine’s relationship grows stronger. This is Klaine-centric but is also very much a Blaine-Kurt-Karofsky-Santana-Brittany friendship fic. Funny and touching and painful and lovely and real.

Paper/Soap by Neaf (2 parts, NC-17)

So Neaf finally took a brief detour from the CrissColfer ship to venture into Klainedom, and holy fuck are we lucky that she did. All you need to know is that this is a Klaine Fightclub AU fic, and it’s fucking genius.

Until My Dying Breath by Emilianadarling (10 chapters plus epilogue, NC-17)

This is perhaps the only true horror fic I have encountered in this fandom, and it is absolutely excellent. Kurt is a vampire in this fic – not a brooding but warm-hearted vampire, but a cold-blooded killer who likes to play with his food. When Blaine first encounters him, he thinks he’s met a guy he could really get to like – until Kurt’s secret is revealed a little too soon and an intense game of cat and mouse ensues. As the story progresses Blaine’s inner strength and ability to endure what Kurt is putting him through is tested again and again, and it becomes more and more evident that Kurt doesn’t just want Blaine for a simple meal. The drama, suspense and psychological torment that Emiliana weaves into this fic is downright stunning. Be prepared to become less and less certain of what you want the outcome to be as you progress. This fic is truly a work of art.

Once Upon… by Neaf (15 chapters, M)

This fic is an Enchanted AU, and even though I haven’t seen the movie I know the basic premise and I’m enjoying this lovely story just fine. Blaine is literally a fairytale prince in this one, somehow transported to modern-day New York in search of a princess. Instead what he finds is one Kurt Hummel, fabulous and beautiful and compassionate as always, but also jaded and lovelorn. As they grow closer, Blaine discovers that perhaps his quest is not as straightforward as he originally thought, and Kurt discovers that reality can sometimes be far stranger (and more wonderful) than fiction.

Temptation’s Mate by Sugakane_01 (22 chapters, NC-17)

This fic is like fucking CANDY. It is a dark fantasy romance AU, and the premise is that Blaine is the powerful and charismatic leader of a vampire clan, and Kurt is a half-warlock, half-fey (i.e. faerie) that he is obsessed with. Blaine is kind of dark and evil in this one, but he is utterly obsessed with Kurt, and the fic starts off with Kurt rejecting his advances even though he badly wants to give into his desire to be with Blaine. The story gets twisted and complex and amazing from there, incorporating a lot of Greek and Celtic mythology as well as vampire legend and the author’s own creative vision. There are faeries and vampires and werewolves and witches and there’s action and adventure and sex and romance and holy sweet fuck, it’s just incredible. FYI- there is some mild d/s interaction in later chapters.

Until You Feel the Daylight (aka Untitled Dean/Kurt/Blaine threesome fic) by Aubreyli (one-shot, NC-17)

So this is technically a crossover fic, but it’s such a PWP that what-fucking-ever, really. If you haven’t seen Supernatural, just accept that demons can make people do weird shit, and google a picture of Jensen Ackles. After accepting that he is one of the hottest fucking men alive, read this fic. It is so good and so blindingly hot that it hurts. Basically, Kurt and Dean have rescued Blaine from being sacrificed by a demon, and in the process they got hit with a curse that will kill them if they don’t fuck it out of their systems. Yeah. Um…YEAH.

Shine by Klemonademouth (11 chapters, M)

This is a Stardust/Glee crossover fic, and it’s amazing. Even if you haven’t read Stardust by Neil Gaiman or seen the movie, you will very much enjoy this fic in its own right. It is a funny, lovely, beautiful fairytale of a love story, with a full cast of Glee characters fleshing out the Stardust ‘verse. Just read it. If you like fairytale-esque Klaine AUs, you will adore this.

For Which I Have To Howl by Emilianadarling (5 chapters, NC-17)

This is one of my favorites EVER. It’s werewolf AU and it’s incredibly well done, with a complex social structure and all the tensions that come with it. And the sex is amazing. I do want to mention one thing about it which is kind of a spoiler if you don’t read the prompt that the fic was written to fill, so…

SPOILER! - In the prompt itself, there is a noncon scenario. However, Emilianadarling doesn’t really do this. The scenario is slightly dubcon, but only slightly. Kind of not even really. It’s in chapter 4 and she puts a warning in at the beginning.

We Compare our Hearts to Things That Fly but Cannot Land by Twivamp92 (7 chapters, NC-17)

This is a fantastic AU wherein Kurt longs for a soulmate…and then meets and befriends Blaine Anderson. The boys soon discover that it is physically painful not to be around one another and eventually they get to the point where they need to be in physical contact to avoid the headaches, nausea and general pain of being apart. Whatever will they do?

Part of Your World by Illyriaz-shell (17 chapters, M)

This fic is so creative and clever and fantabulous. The author somehow tells the story of Disney’s The Little Mermaid while making it a canon-referencing AU Klaine fic. There are no mermaids in this, but Sue practices the black arts and uses her evil powers to control people and get what she wants. She tricks Kurt into giving up his voice in exchange for a month at Dalton and a chance to win Blaine’s heart, not realizing there was a clause in the contract that puts all of New Directions’ voices at risk. And Brittany and Santana as Flotsam and Jetsam? Oh, yes. This is such a seamless blend of storylines that I am simply in awe.

Make you Feel my Love, Listen and This is Music, This is Madness by Miss_begonia (Listen is a PG-13 drabble, the others are 2 chapters apiece, NC-17)

Read these in order - Music is the sequel to Love, and Listen is a sweet little interlude that twines the two together.  If I didn’t have these in the supernatural AU category, I can assure you that the supernatural twist in the first fic would take you entirely by surprise. Very AU- the author’s description for Love is this: “Kurt is working as a waiter in a cocktail bar. Blaine, a stockbroker, is about to get picked up, shaken up and turned around.” I don’t want to say too much, as it is the kind of story that is best enjoyed without knowing a whole lot about what’s coming, but I will say this – I spent more time hunting these fics down than any other for this rec page. I fucking love them and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Surrender Self Control by Musical Memory Maker (37 chapters, M)

This is a really kickass werewolf AU, with a complex family/social structure and lots of politics, and it’s just fascinating and delicious. In this ‘verse, humans know of the existence of werewolves, but they don’t knowingly interact with them for the most part, nor do they understand how pack life works. Kurt is bitten by a werewolf, and is thus taken into the fold by Blaine’s family, who are all wolves. But the perils and unique challenges of being a young gay werewolf aren’t just something Kurt needs to navigate. It’s new territory for Blaine, too. There is also a WIP sequel for this posted.

The Red Carpet Treatment by Stellata (WIP, 9 chapters so far, M)

So I  originally put this fic in a category by itself because it appeared to be an abandoned WIP, having not updated in close to a year.  But then…lo and behold…it actually updated!  And Stellata stated in her A/N that she is committed to finishing it!  YES!  The reason I am KEEPING it in a category by itself is that it really isn’t exclusively a Klaine fic, even though I strongly sense a Klaine endgame coming on.

The premise is this: Do you remember that scene in ‘Never Been Kissed’ when Kurt asked if all the Warblers were gay after seeing them perform Teenage Dream? Well, what if the answer had been yes? And what if not only that, but there was an initiation process whereby joining the Warblers entailed making oneself sexually available to the entire group for the first two months of one’s membership (because that’s why we’re all so close and sound so good and work so well together)? What then? I’ll tell you what. You might get really, really, really TURNED THE FUCK ON.

This is definitely a Klaine-centric fic, but Kurt does fuck all the other Warblers as well, and he has a hell of a fantastic time doing it too.  This fic is kind of like a really hot PWP that just continues on for chapters and chapters and chapters.  Keep a change of undies handy.  You’ll probably need them. 

Good Old-Fashioned Vanilla Klaine:

Northern Sky by Onsunlightwings (one-shot, NC-17)

This is a toasty little one-shot wherein Kurt and Blaine take a winter camping trip with Finn, Puck Wes and David so that they can see the Aurora Borealis (and have sex underneath it while everyone else is sleeping. Sigh…that is so on my bucket list). This fic displays pitch-perfect characterization of all the boys, and features lots of heartwarming male bonding amongst the group. Best read with a cup of hot cocoa.

Five Times Blaine Was Kurt’s First and One Time They Were Each Others’ by denofiniquity (one-shot, NC-17)

Pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. This is now AU only in that it’s been severely Jossed since it’s been written. So put your early season 2 goggles on for this fic in which Blaine is older and more experienced than Kurt, and they get together and start having sex waaaaaaaay sooner than they do in canon.

Perfect in My Mind by Skintightsocks (3 chapters, NC-17)

This is probably the funniest and best virginity-losing Klaine fic I’ve ever read. Let’s just say that the first two chapters are pretty much one failed attempt after another to cash in v-cards.

The Sun’s Not Up Yet by E.M. Zeray (one-shot, M)

This is a glorious blend of fluff and smut. Kurt wakes up very early after his and Blaine’s first time together, and he thinks back on the experience and is all adorable and in-love. If they could bottle this fic it would cure depression.

Than the Sum of its Parts by Flaming_muse (5 chapters. M, but a really light M)

“The whole of Kurt and Blaine’s relationship is greater than the sum of its parts. Scenes of two boys in love.” This is set between Original Songs and ends during the summer between seasons 2 and 3. Just beautiful glimpses into their relationship- the kind of thing we would have seen in canon if Glee were the Klaine show.

Feeling Good by Aeria (3 chapters, M)

A progression in Kurt and Blaine’s physical relationship. This involves a lot of resolution to the issues brought up in ‘Sexy’ (episode 2x15), and Kurt setting aside his insecurities and becoming more comfortable with physical intimacy and all it entails. This is really well done, all kinds of awkward and teenaged in the most authentic way, and very sweet and satisfying when all is said and done.

Motel Story by Rainjoy (3 Chapters, NC-17 for parts 2 and 3)

So this is actually 3 separate stories, but they exist as a series and are best read together, so I am recommending them as one fic.  This is the awkward, sweet, sexy story of Kurt and Blaine’s journey into a sexually active relationship. I really cannot express the sheer brilliant degree to which this manages to be hilarious AND hot, and in such perfect balance.

All I see is you by Skintightsocks (one-shot, NC-17)

First-time sex, funny and sweet and sexy and lovely.  That’s really all you need to know.

Keystrokes by Caroline_shea (one-shot, NC-17)

This whole thing is an IM conversation between the boys. Starts out with feelings and relationship Klainey goodness, and ends up turning into first-time cybersex that is equal parts sexy and awkward

Do Not Disturb by Rainjoy (one-shot, NC-17)

Oh my holy fucking fuck. This is just a one-shot of beautiful sex and feelings and intimacy and holy fuck it’s perfect. You should read it.

Sweet Nothings by Herostratic (one-shot, NC-17)

Kurt has a kink for being called dirty, shaming names during sex and he finally gets up the nerve to ask Blaine to fulfill his fantasy. This fic is unbelievably hot not just because of the dirty talk, but because Blaine is so very Blaine in his efforts to give Kurt what he wants. He slips in and out of “character” (i.e. the character Kurt’s asking him to play) a bit, which adds a real edge of tender sweetness to this otherwise hot and dirty PWP.

Kink PWP Series: Origins, Not Appropriate For All Audiences and I Would Be the One by The Cimmerians (3 sequential one-shots, NC-17 for all three)

Well, do I honestly need to say more than “This is porn written by the Cimmerians?” Probably not, but I will anyway. This series (and there may be more to come) chronicles Kurt and Blaine’s tentative explorations with various kinks: the first involves strength and power play (Kurt finds that he likes being held down), the second public sex and the third light bondage. Nothing too hardcore, but as always the intense hotness is perfectly balanced with all the feelings and vulnerability and issues and courage that go with exploring kink with a trusted partner, because this is porn written by the Cimmerians. Delicious as always.

Disguise Our Bondage by Alura_embrey (9 chapters, NC-17)

This is a beautifully crafted world in which everyone is classified as a dom, sub or switch at a young age and laws are in place to try and ensure that subs aren’t abused. In those cases where it happens anyhow, places such as Dalton Academy for Submissive and Switch Rehabilitation exist. Blaine is a student there, a sub who was horrifically abused by his last dom, and he is struggling with the healing process. Enter Kurt Hummel, a switch who captures Blaine’s attention in a way he never could have anticipated. Students aren’t meant to have romantic relationships at Dalton, but some rules were made to be broken. This fic is very well-written and engaging; poor traumatized Blainers will make your heart ache, and a compassionate, dominating Kurt will make your heart soar.

Hold me (Down) by Fabfemmeboy (one-shot, NC-17)

This is a tasty little headcanon fic taking place after the Night of Neglect. Kurt finds himself strangely turned on by Blaine shoving Karofsky and then getting a bit aggressively handsy with Kurt at the end of the night as well. There’s lots of nervous, awkward embarrassment from both boys, but what it comes down to is that they both find it kinda hot when Blaine holds Kurt down while they make out. This fic is very hot, with lots of feelings. My favorite combination.

Untitled Kink Meme Fill by Animalsweaters (6 parts, R-ish)

OK, so this is the sort of thing that would initially make me run the other way, but I read it on a whim and oh my god am I glad I did. So just hear me out, OK? This is a PuppyKitty fic, and it is one of the most perfect little fics in the genre. It’s incredibly hilarious and insanely witty and clever, and the only potential squick is that kitty!Kurt and puppy!Blaine (though he’s really a dog rather than a puppy in this one) do have sex. But WAIT! Don’t stop reading this rec just yet! Stay with me, OK? The sex was the one reason I stayed away for a long time despite hearing how good it was, and honestly graphic sex would have been a squick for me, but it really is very vague and not written to be erotic so much as cute and funny and innocent and sweet (Blaine thinks he can get Kurt pregnant and he wants a baby with him. It really is quite adorable). The humans they live with are Rachel and Finn, and Rachel kind of figures out what they’re trying to do (in a ridiculously believable Rachel sort of way), and gets them a kitten to raise as their baby. This fic is one of the few that literally made me laugh out loud – I really hope you give it a shot.

Start Me Up by Thepsychicclam (one-shot, NC-17)

So first and foremost, let me mention that this is a PucKlaine fic. This is one of those deliciously long one-shots that feels like a compressed multi-chapter fic. After recently graduating from college in New York, Blaine is in a bit of a funk and having trouble finding work so he and Kurt decide to spend the summer in Lima. He finds himself starting to hang out with Puck, and a surprising friendship develops between them. As the summer progresses, he and Kurt grow even closer, but his feelings about Puck start to get complicated. And that’s just the beginning.

This fic is an example of the only kind of multi-shipping I can manage to do when it comes to Klaine: Kurt and Blaine in a rock-solid relationship that is not weakened when it becomes non-monogamous, Only hottened. And dear lord is it hottened here. I am desperately hoping for a sequel to this one.

Enzymes by Stut-ter (8 chapters plus epilogue, NC-17)

Blaine is a young financial wiz who is extremely successful but lonely and unfulfilled. One day he is handed a business card with one simple word printed on it: desidarte. It turns out that it is an agency that functions as much more than a high-end brothel – Desidarte specializes in scenes, and Blaine requests one of his deepest fantasies, expecting a thrilling but solitary sexual experience. What he gets is so much more.

This fic is really fantastic, encompassing sex and angst and intimacy and kink and the pain and freedom of pushing past one’s comfort zone. I don’t want to give away much more than what I’ve described but I will say that yes, Kurt is a prostitute (of sorts) in this fic, and yes, there is much more to it than that.

Bullet Removal 101 by Stellata (one-shot, M)

This is a dirty little Klaine classic. It is set at Dalton-as-a-boarding-school and written well before Original Songs. Kurt gets a vibrating bullet stuck inside himself and calls Blaine, desperate for help. This fic gets very hot very fast. Fisting, playing with a sex toy, good old-fashioned fucking, and Blaine acting sweet but toppy and a bit dom. I’m pretty sure this is one of the hottest things I will ever read.

It’s On by Sassafrass91 (one-shot, M)

Blaine picks up a prostitute by the name of Kurt and brings him to a hotel. This is really fucking hot, and there is a twist at the end that makes the whole thing just utterly and completely perfect.

Broken (By the Thought and Sight of You) by Animal_Sweaters (one-shot, NC-17)

I now have a title and author for this formerly anonymous kink meme fill thanks to Keri (Whoreishmouth)! Hooray! I love giving credit where credit is due! In this fic, Kurt and Blaine never met in high school but are placed together as roommates in college and become good friends. Kurt is always going out with other guys and is quite promiscuous, while Blaine just silently lusts after Kurt, absolutely worshiping and obsessing over his ass. When they finally get together, it “isn’t just a hookup,” but it is rough and dirty and hot as fuck- fisting, rimming, spanking, felching, and a very toppy Blaine are all on the menu. Really hot and really, REALLY fucking good.

Ebb and Flow by Aeria (one-shot, M)

Edging. I fucking love edging. This is an amazing hotel/shower sex one-shot. If you like really long, drawn out, graphic, beautifully-written Klaine smut, this is the fic for you. A bit of power play that gets switched up. Hot as fuck.

Teenage Dream by Wordplay (one-shot, NC-17)

This story fits in with the AV!Verse, which you should definitely read but I am forced not to list due to my self-imposed 3-rec-per-author limit. This definitely stands alone, though, and it’s basically a PWP. Role-playing involving ageplay. Read the warnings. Very hot.

A Political Romance  (44 chapters) and A Legal Romance by YaDiva (34 chapters plus epilogue)by YaDiva (both rated M)

This is a long-ass fic with a long-ass sequel, and they’re both deliciously kinky and endlessly inventive and they are my crack. I must warn you that this ‘verse is incredibly addictive, and you might not even understand why. Where to even start in explaining these fics? Blaine is the son of a right-wing politician, and while his parents know he is gay, he is forbidden to date. But Blaine has an ability – it’s a gift or a curse or more likely both, and it’s quite dark in nature. This ability necessitates a particular type of relationship in order to work and remain strong, and Blaine slowly begins to find that relationship in Kurt. What develops is a master/slave type of dynamic. The author is firm that this is not a BDSM dynamic, and it really isn’t. If you like BDSM lifestyle fics this might appeal to you, though, as it has some similar overtones. There’s a lot of dark and twisted stuff here, but I think what makes it work so well is the author’s sense of humor. She knows exactly what she’s doing, and there is a strong thread of tongue-in-cheek dark humor that only enhances the face-value enjoyment of the fics. I will warn you that these fics contain violence, murder, and dark supernatural themes. And Blaine is a bit of an evil motherfucker in them, but he does love Kurt desperately and completely, so don’t you worry your pretty little head about that.

Everyday by Whatiknew (25 chapters, NC-17)

This fic is downright brilliant. You know when a kink meme fill turns into something about a hundred times more incredible than the original prompt called for? Well, this is about a hundred times better than that. In this fic Kurt was in a horrible accident and spends over a month in a coma. Just as Blaine and Burt are preparing to pull the plug and let him go, Kurt wakes up…with absolutely no memories past the age of fourteen. From there, what we see is Kurt’s fear and confusion, and Blaine’s pain and relief – because he has Kurt back, but not his Kurt. Not the Kurt he knew. And not a Kurt that is in love with him. They slowly get to know each other again, hopeful that Kurt staying with Blaine will help him to regain the memories that he lost, and what develops is a delicate and tender connection, highlighting how deep their bond truly is.

What I have lost by Bekah_r (13 chapters, NC-17)

This fic is so sweet and sad. Kurt returns to Lima with his young son, having been widowed in his 20s. He and Blaine remained friends after they broke up, but Blaine never stopped loving Kurt. Blaine also never ended up leaving Ohio. They find themselves reconnecting and spending a lot of time together, but Kurt’s feelings are far more complicated than anyone – including Blaine or even Kurt himself – can understand. Kurt also has a toddler son in this, and while I am very picky about kids in fics, this story showcases parenthood very realistically, especially in Kurt’s circumstance, and the kid does seem pretty darn cute. Lots of lovely Hudmel interaction here too.

Reunited by WhoreishMouth (10 chapters, M)

Kurt and Blaine haven’t seen each other in five years when they run into each other. Blaine isn’t over it, but Kurt has a boyfriend and seems to have moved on. They decide to try and be friends, but is it really that simple? This is really angsty in parts, but really sweet as well. It also deals with a lot of difficult and sometimes ugly emotions in a really elegant way.

Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust by Aelora (5 chapters, R)

If it’s possible to write cute angst, Aelora has done it with this fic. It’s a really sweet and lovely future fic wherein Kurt is a wedding coordinator at Disney World and Blaine works as a performer playing a Disney prince. It’s been years since they’ve seen each other, and it didn’t end well. Can the most magical place on earth bring them back together?

The Luckiest by Wordplay (9 chapters, NC-17)

Kurt and Blaine broke up years ago, but things, of course, still feel unresolved. When 2 of the boys’ high school friends get married, they want their closest friends there to help them plan and get ready during the week preceding. Will K & B spend the week drowning in awkward angst, or could this be their second chance?

Really angsty but Really Worth it:

Going for Broke by Andwakesimagination (16 chapters, M)

This fic is absolutely original and beautiful and bold and a breath of fresh air. Blaine is a stockbroker in New York, and he meets a free-spirited young artist named Kurt one day that turns his entire world upside down. I don’t want to disclose too much about what happens, because I feel like the twist in the story works really well as a twist, but if Kurt seems OOC to you early on, don’t fret. It ends up making perfect sense in context. This fic is almost brutal in its honesty when it comes to flawed and complicated human relationships, but that is part of what makes it so gorgeous. The writing is incredible, and the angst will crack your heart straight down the middle, but don’t worry – it will sew it back up again too.

Looking for a Happy Ending by Firefly_ca (5 parts plus epilogue, NC-17)

This isn’t NC-17 for the reason you might hope – this is a very unsettling, angsty and brilliant fic in which Blaine was abducted as a child and now lives with the man he knows to be his “father.” Blaine gives the outward appearance of being more or less OK, given how normalized the abuse and exploitation at home has become, and when he is 16 he and his “father” move to Lima and he enrolls at McKinley where he meets Kurt and the rest of ND. This fic is so gorgeously crafted and so gut-wrenchingly painful to read. The author draws heavily from actual stories of child abduction, and Blaine’s experience is as complicated and honest as they come. While there is not much in the way of really graphic sexual abuse, it’s definitely in there a fair amount, so stay away from this fic if that’s a trigger for you (in addition to the numerous other potential triggers that the author lists). I will say that as painful as this fic is, the introduction of Kurt is the introduction of hope, and it’s really worth reading through to the end.

Waiting for a Happy Ending by Firefly_ca (5 chapters plus epilogue, NC-17) 

This is the sequel to Looking for a Happy Ending.  This fic chronicles the way in which Blaine adjusts to his new life after the events of the previous fic, and how his relationship with Kurt develops given all he is going through. I actually think I might like the sequel even more than the original, and that’s really saying something. Just like the original, though, this fic will make you ache.

The Time Traveler’s Heart by Alisha Torn (3 chapters, R)

This fic is unbelievably gorgeous and unbelievably heartbreaking.  It is based on The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.  Just…there are angsty fics, and then there are fics that prod your heart gently, allowing it to open like a shy, vulnerable flower, and then crush it until it is nothing but a stain on the sidewalk.

Yes.  This is just such a fic.

Blaine is the time-traveler in this story, and he is essentially unstuck in time.  I don’t even want to say much more than that, except that this is one of the most beautifully-written love stories I have ever encountered.  It is simply breathtaking.

 At the very end of the fic is a link to the author’s alternate ending.  I HIGHLY recommend that you read it as well.  There is a sequel, but I honestly don’t think I can do it right now.  This really is an intense read.  Save it for when you know you can handle it.

You Belong to Me by Mothergoddamn (17 chapters, M)

So I wasn’t really sure how to categorize this fic, but I finally settled on angst even though parts of it are really fucking funny (it’s a Mothergoddamn fic, after all), because overall it is just so heartbreaking. This is set in an AU ‘verse in which the worst criminals are re-conditioned into bond-servants. Bond servants are purchased and treated essentially like slaves, and it is widely known that they are often used sexually too. But there is more to the arrangement than meets the eye, and the truth is even more horrific than what most people have been lead to believe. When a bond-servant manages to escape one day, having been brainwashed so thoroughly that he can’t even remember his own name, who will help him? This is such a nail-biting, nerve-wracking and emotionally painful fic to read, though all that is tempered with absolutely brilliant humor.

WARNING: This fic contains noncon/dubcon elements, so if that is a trigger for you, definitely do not read it.

If (you and I) Were to Fall in Love by Of_a_crescendo (2 parts, R)

A (mostly) Future fic about how dangerous it is to love deeply. A beautiful and painful love story. So very worth it, but you will ache.

How it Ends by Mary-Flanner (2 chapters, R)

This is beautiful and incredible and real and heartbreaking and amazing. Please read it. It will move you. (Warning: There is a character death, though it isn’t Kurt or Blaine. It will probably make you cry, though).

My Body Betrays Me by Emilianadarling(5 chapters, NC-17)

So, I had to really think about whether I should add this. I absolutely love it, but it is the kind of thing that will trigger the HELL out of some people, so really proceed at your own risk, even in reading my description of it. Once again, Emilianadarling takes a prompt from the kink meme and makes it into something complex and intense and incredible. This is kind of an Ella Enchanted AU wherein Kurt suffers from a family curse that compels him to do whatever people tell him to do. He and Karofsky are roommates at Dalton, and Dave discovers the curse and takes horrific advantage. Cue the terrifying mind control and rape, and Dave convincing himself that this is really love and Kurt is actually his boyfriend. Yes, this is Klaine, and yes, Blaine does come to the rescue (though Kurt’s own strength is integral to fighting back as well). This fic will send shivers down your spine, and it is definitely not for the faint of heart.

The Five Stages of Getting Over Kurt Hummel by Flyblckbirdfly (3 parts, NC-17)

Holy shit. This fic is so good but so intense. Blaine goes through the 5 stages of grieving after Kurt breaks up with him while they’re in college. I usually don’t like to give away endings, but I am amazed that I made it through to the end on this one without knowing, so I’ll just tell you right now that it’s going to be OK. This is serious angst-on-steroids. Be warned.

But With a Whimper by Of_a_crescendo (one-shot, R)

This is one of THE most heartbreaking angst fics I have EVER read. “Everyone is born with the name of their soulmate on their hand. The only problem? Kurt and Blaine don’t have each other’s names on their hands.”

Yeah.

It really is beautiful, but only read it if you’re feeling particularly strong today.

Forget Me Not by Beautifulwhatsyourhurry (10 chapters, M)

This fic will just eat your soul. It just captures the overwhelming pain of years-long heartache and you can’t help but let it in. The premise is this: Blaine’s family moved away when Kurt and Blaine were still in high school and they were wrenched apart. They haven’t spoken in years, and Kurt is in his early 20s and living in Los Angeles. He runs into Blaine, who is backpacking across the country, and invites him to stay on his couch. And oh my God the fucking angst and longing and yearning is just too much and it hurts so fucking good. This is probably my favorite angst fic.

So Many Humans, So Many Colours by Monochromaticsongbird (one-shot, M)

So this is pretty much way too esoteric to even describe properly. Blaine died when he was 19, but he somehow finds himself pulled back into the world and watching over a blind Kurt Hummel in a psychiatric institution. Incredibly dark themes, character death, heartbreaking angst beyond measure, but intensely gorgeous prose. Don’t read this if you are the least bit suicidal- and I’m really quite serious when I say that.

WIPs that are worth starting now even if waiting for updates makes you feel like you’re going to die:

Little Numbers by Iknowitainteasy (18 chapters so far, PG-13)

So if you are one of the three or four people in this fandom that haven’t read this yet, I urge you to drop what you are doing and start it right now. This fic is lovely and very skillfully done. I was pretty skeptical at first about a multi-chapter fic told entirely in text messages and phone calls, but the author does a brilliant job of making it work. The premise is that Blaine and Kurt never met in high school, and they are both college students in New York. Blaine sends a text message to a wrong number, and when he receives a sassy reply an unconventional rapport is born. Kurt is the other texter (obviously), and it’s amazing how much substance and adorability (cute animal alert!) is packed into the initially very casual texts. The only thing I don’t like about this fic is that it is an incredibly fast read, which makes waiting for updates all the more agonizing.

(Def)inition by Hedgerose (14 chapters so far, M)

This is an extremely dystopian AU in which Blaine is essentially sold into slavery at the age of 15 when his parents find out he is gay. He is considered to be a Defective (Def for short), and he loses his freedom and personhood as part of a social system that isn’t considered to really be slavery at all - Basically, the government owns him but people or agencies can lease him for periods of time, and 11 years later he ends up contracted to Kurt.

Now, let me just pause to say that Kurt does NOT purchase Blaine for sex, is not even slightly complacent about the system, and does not like the idea of owning another human being at all. He is sweet, moral, compassionate Kurt in this fic and his reasons for buying Blaine make sense within the context of the story, I assure you.

This fic is SO hard to read sometimes because it is just heartbreaking, but it is definitely worth it because it is so skillfully done and incredibly well written. The world is very well fleshed-out, and the fic does not shy away from messy interactions and painfully difficult situations. Definitely pay attention to the warnings that the author provides, though, and be prepared to absolutely ache.

Stop Loss by YourFairyGodfather (24 chapters so far, M)

In this fic, Kurt never went to McKinley, instead enrolling at Carmel and joining Vocal Adrenaline. After the Sadie Hawkins dance, Blaine is visiting potential new schools and decides on Carmel rather than Dalton after meeting Kurt. What follows is just an absolutely fantastic love story, with bumps in the road and issues and turmoil and sweetness and humor. YFG is, I think, one of the best humor writers in this fandom, and the ever-present Jesse St. James is painted so perfectly it’s almost too much to even handle. Especially given the fact that he and Kurt are best friends in this ‘verse. What’s also fantastic is this version of Kurt – popular and at ease with himself, in a school with an active GSA and a healthy appreciation for the arts. He’s still our Kurt, but he’s our Kurt with far less stigma and bullying and ostracism under his belt, and as such, there is a bit of a role reversal in his early relationship with Blaine. It is Blaine who shows up scared and hurt and broken, and Kurt who is able to help Blaine and take him under his wing. This fic is definitely one of my all-time favorites.

Roses in December by Ckofshadows (15 chapters so far, T)

This is sooooooooo angsty but soooooooo pretty.  Blaine goes into a coffee shop and doesn’t quite get why the barista knows his name. He sees a good-looking guy and starts talking to him, but he doesn’t know why the guy’s blue eyes seem so sad.

And how exactly does he just know that the guy drives a black navigator?

Under Oath by Poisonivy231 (3 chapters so far, M)

Instead of being denied the right to marry, gay and lesbian teenagers are paired off and forcibly married to strangers at the age of 18 to keep them from preying upon the noble heterosexuals of the land.  Kurt is paired with Blaine, and they are required to consummate the marriage on their wedding night.  This goes from angsty to fluffy in the most beautifully skillful way, and the nuances of the situation are handled very well.

Aunt Alice’s Farm by WhoreishMouth (12 chapters so far, M)

Okay, yes, I admit it. At first I was just so very excited about this fic because it’s a Dairy Farmer Blaine fic, and the author said she got the idea from The Sidhe. So full disclosure and all that. But I have to say, this became one of my current favorites in its own right. The premise here is that Finn and Kurt go and spend the summer on a farm run by Kurt’s aunt and her partner. Blaine works for them as a farm hand, and he and Kurt start making googly-eyes at each other. The story is just so sexy and lovely and cute and summery and of course it’s Keri, so what smut we’ve encountered so far is straight-up scorching.

Consonance & Dissonance by Whenidance (7 chapters so far, M)

This fic is a Teacher!Blaine AU, but WAIT. Even if you’re not into it usually, just let me explain. In this fic, Blaine is a hot young professor and Kurt is a University student. Blaine is only 4 years older than Kurt in this fic, and a lot of the power dynamics that folks may usually not enjoy about teacher Blaine fics are really not at play here. This is SO well done and SO well-written, and I really urge you to read it! There are 4 parts right now, but the author has said that more are to come, and I will try to post them as they do.

Far Better Fate by Brontosaurus (12 chapters so far, M)

This is a beautifully-written fic that really captures complex human emotions and motivations. This fic is told from Blaine’s POV. He never met Kurt et al in high school, but does when he decides to transfer to a small New England liberal arts college. There are several ND and Warblers characters at the fictional school, and Kurt is pretty jaded to start with. I want to mention that the first couple chapters of this fic consist of pretty dense backstory, but if you wade through them (and the backstory is important), it is very much worth it.

Let Me be the One by AraniaDuncan (27 chapters so far, M)

This lovely fic has it all- lacings of angst tempered by clouds of fluff, a well-paced relationship, and the perfect amount of conflict and drama. The smut fits in well and always feels organic to the story. Just a really good, straightforward Klaine multi-chapter. I should probably also mention that this goes AU after BICO, and Kurt remains at Dalton through the entire school year.

Pure Kismet by GleeDWhoFreak (8 chapters so far, M)

This is one of those fics that I really wish updated more often. This fic is set around a 24/7 BDSM lifestyle. Everyone assumes that doms are always tops, but Kurt is a dom who likes to bottom. And he’s sick of having casual relationships with boys that only sometimes know what they’re doing. He’s looking for something more with someone who isn’t new to the scene. And then he meets Blaine. This fic is incredibly hot, but it also gives some attention to power dynamics and respect in lifestyle BDSM, in a really spot-on kind of way. And dom!bottom Kurt paired with sub!top Blaine wasn’t something I realized I needed until I found this fic, but FUCK does it work for me.
